Basic Life Support — BLS — is the certification dental offices talk about only when someone's is about to expire. That's backwards. It's worth understanding what it actually covers, who needs it, and why "we'll schedule it eventually" tends to become "we scheduled it two weeks after it lapsed."
What BLS actually is
BLS certification, most commonly through the American Heart Association, trains healthcare providers to recognize and respond to cardiac arrest, choking, and other life-threatening emergencies — CPR, use of an AED, and team-based response, specifically built for a clinical setting rather than a general public course.
It's different from a general "Heartsaver" CPR class you might take for a lifeguard job or a workplace requirement. BLS for Healthcare Providers assumes a clinical environment and trains for it accordingly.
Who on a dental team actually needs it
Most state dental boards require it for anyone providing direct patient care — hygienists, assistants, and dentists — and many offices extend that expectation to the whole clinical team regardless of exact state requirements, simply because an emergency doesn't wait to see who's certified.
How often it actually expires
AHA BLS certification is typically valid for two years. The trouble isn't the two-year clock — it's that two years is long enough to forget it's coming until it's a problem. A hygienist who temps across multiple offices, or an office bringing on new hires throughout the year, ends up tracking several different expiration dates instead of one.
In-office group training vs. individual classes
Both work. The right choice usually comes down to timing:
- In-office group training makes sense when several team members are due around the same time, or when a new hire needs to get certified before their start date lines up with anyone else's schedule. It also means the whole team trains together, which matters more than it sounds like — a real emergency is a team response, not an individual one.
- Individual provider classes make more sense for one person on a different renewal cycle than the rest of the team, or a temp professional who needs to stay current between office placements.
